Tracking. As the world's second best scent hound (second to the Blood Hound) they are used as trackers in the field.
Many bassets are still used as trackers, but mostly they are pets and companions these days. 33 - 38 cm at withers, so they are large breed dogs of considerable substance and bone (about 23 (females) - 32 (males) kg in weight). Placid, never aggressive, loving and affectionate. They make great family pets and are wonderful with children. They are compatible with nearly any other dog breed and with cats. They have short coats, but are constant shedders, so regular brushing is required. They are active for short periods at a time, so regular walks and some play time daily is sufficient. About 8 - 12 years. Heath issues include, but are not limited to, allergies, cancer, ear and eye infections, obesity, panosteitis, cherry eye, entropion and bloat. |
